Yesterday I went to see Brian Eno’s Speaker Flower Sound Installation in Marlborough House on Brighton’s Old Steine. This lovely but strange grade I listed building for me was almost more exciting that Brian Eno’s exhibition. I’ve walked past this building many time and wondered what the interior is like. I did like the exhibition and in particular the small room sandwiched between the room with the fake grass and the speaker flower installation room. The little box room has a number of potted plants and large comfortable chairs. Once you weaved your way through the plants, sat down and put on one of the headphone you melted into tranquility.
I was enthralled by the unusual layout of the stairs and the doors that lead to other parts of the building that the public couldn’t access. Apparently the interior has had a lot of reorganising done to it over the years. Well worth a visit before the festival finishes.

Having looked at our brief from Mary our group have started to look into the use of audio and combining this with the fact that every culture has fables. Elizabetta from Italy has ‘Little red riding hood’ and ‘Pinocchio’ and in Ireland its ‘The Children of Lir’ and ‘Salmon of Knowledge’. This is only a starting point for our group and who knows where the project will go but I think recording stories from 30 countries (London will be the Games of the 30th (XXX) Olympiad) and combining them to create a new one could be interesting and fun.
Below I found a link to a simular project that the Olympic commitee will run.
Stories of the world.
Stories of the World is one of the major projects at the heard of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It is being led by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) in partnership with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Through Stories of the World people of all backgrounds, from every part o the UK, will become ‘curators’ of the collections and objects held in museums, libraries and archives. They’ll have the chance to come up with new ways of representing material, then put on their own series of exhibitions.
A few interesting facts about the games.
- We expect 205 nations to take part in 300 events at the Olympic Games in 2012. 147 nations will take part in the Paralympic Games.
- London will be the Games of the 30th (XXX) Olympiad.
- 900 medals will be handed out during the Olympic Games in 2012.
- A total of 14,700 athletes will compete at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- The Olympic symbol (the Olympic rings) expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic games.

Looking at the history of the local area with a view to informing participants about the community in which they live and work, and provide opportunities for fun tasters and future learning opportunities.
The collective formed by some of the Brighton DMA MA students The Digital Table will have a pitch in Jubilee Sq showing some interactive pieces of digital art from their last block of work. The digital Table will also have 3 more pieces of work inside the Jubilee library on the day.
The Living Light is a building facade of the future that displays air quality and public interest in the environment. It is a permanent outdoor pavilion in Peace Park, across from World Cup Stadium in Seoul, Korea. This dynamic facade responds to real-time air quality data and to public interest in the environment. It also glows according to data and public interest. The panels of the structure are made up of the districts of Seoul. It can request and receive information via the web and each night, the neighborhoods light up if their air quality is better today than last year. Every 15 minutes, the map goes dark and then the neighborhoods light up in order of best current air quality to worst. You can alo text your area code to the living light and it will flash to show it has received your text and you will then receive a text back about the quality of air in your area. This structure also provides a canopy for the public, a focal point in the park and a source of useful information for the Seoul inhabitants.
I really enjoyed looking at everyone’s blogs on Thursdays and getting fee back on my own. Thanks boys for reminding me about firebug. As Sue suggested I will post more of my own thoughts on my blog. I have also started to think more about the theory side of the course and have created a new reading list for my self. If anyone has any book suggestion please do let me know. So until I get some book I’m going to keep struggling with my Flash game!!!
The update with the digital drop-in center and digital art gallery is that The Lighthouse have very generously given us free computers for the project. We are still in need of funding and a space but I have a meeting with Julie Watson who is the Adult Learning Group Project Officer for Brighton and Hove on Monday and maybe she will have some ideas. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know and I will out it to the group.
Troika is a multi-disciplinary art and design agency that was founded in 2003 by Conny Freyer, Eva Rucki and Sebastien Noel. They come from varied back grounds such as graphic and communication, art, product design and engineering. Conny, Eva and Sebastien met while studying at the Royal College of Art in London and produce a variety of work from printed matter to product design and custom art installations.
Troika was commissioned by the Artwise Curators to create a digital signature piece for the entrance of the new British Airwaysluxury lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5. The surface is covered in about 5,000 small electromechanical indicator that flip between black and silver. The designer used the metaphor of the cloud to represent flight and in contrast to the craziness of airports to the peace and beauty we experience up in the clouds.
The Lost boys international are a marketing and technology agency based in London. James was asked to come up with an idea for christmas that represented the sort of work the L.B.I do. This mobile phone installation is six meters in circumference and is the signature piece for the entrance to the Brick Lane studio. They have also added an interactive element to the piece by allowing anyone to visit the live stream and to wow bystanders with their ability to make music on a keyboard: xmas.lbi.co.uk
I came across Theo Watsons lovely funky Forest on coolhunting.com today. It’s an interactive forest for children where they can make trees grow and rivers change direction. All done using openframeworks. They also have some great work on their website. Check them out at http://www.openframeworks.cc/
